New London to hold public hearing on future of Hempstead Street lot

New London — The City Council at 6:45 p.m. on Monday will host a public hearing on the sale of the vacant lot at 43 Hempstead St. to its development arm, the Renaissance City Development Association.

The city purchased the blighted piece of property from the Shiloh Development Corporation in 2020 with the idea of obtaining grant funds for cleanup of environmental hazards that exist on the site.

The RCDA has agreed to take temporary ownership of the property in order to qualify for and manage U.S. Environmental Protection Agency funding necessary to complete the cleanup. The EPA requires a public hearing and opportunity for the public to comment. Cleanup costs are estimated at $429,000.

Public comments can also be emailed to Tom Bombria at tbombria@newlondon.org by Nov. 24.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
