Town of Groton issues indoor mask mandate, starting New Year's Eve

Groton — The town will require people to wear masks in all indoor spaces starting Friday.

The town issued an emergency declaration Thursday, announcing that the indoor mask mandate will be reinstated as of 12:01 a.m. on Friday. The move was in response to a record high COVID-19 positivity rate in the state, which hit 20.33% on Thursday.

Masks or cloth face coverings will be required in any indoor public spaces, private indoor businesses or places of employment where social distancing is not possible, according to a statement issued by the town. People are required to wear masks or face coverings regardless of their vaccination status, it said.

The mandate does not apply to those with medical conditions that render them unable to wear a mask; children under the age of 2; people who are eating or drinking at places that serve food and drinks; or people who are alone in an office setting or separated from others by a partition.

In the statement, the town said members of the Town Council will be reaching out to the public soon for feedback on whether the mandate should remain in place.
