Police: Man leads officers on chase in New London and Waterford
New London — State and local police this week arrested a man on multiple gun charges after they said he fled members of the Statewide Narcotics Task Force and detectives from the New London Police Department.
State police in a Friday news release said Kellon McPherson, 26, ultimately was taken into custody Tuesday morning on outstanding warrants on felony charges of first- and second-degree failure to appear in court, along with criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, possessing a weapon in a motor vehicle and interfering with police. His girlfriend, Jonai Phillips, 30, was charged with engaging in pursuit, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and disobeying the signal of an officer.
State police said they both live at 22 Robinson St. in New London.
Police said the two agencies were attempting to arrest McPherson on the failure to appear warrant charges when he and Phillips fled in a car to Waterford. State police deployed stop sticks, which caused the car to come to a stop with two flat tires.
McPherson attempted to get away on foot while his girlfriend was taken into custody, state police said. He discarded a firearm into the nearby woods before officers nabbed him a short distance from the car, police said.
State police said New London K-9 Officer Joe Kondash and his K-9 partner Zeke located the firearm, assisted by task force detectives and patrol officers from Waterford and New London.
McPherson's record includes multiple drug-related felonies, according to the state Judicial Branch website.
State police said Phillips was released on bond pending her arraignment at New London Superior Court. McPherson was held in lieu of bond pending arraignment in New London. The state Judicial Branch website specified his bond amount at $505,000.
Editor's Note: This version corrects that Joe Kondash is an officer and Zeke is his K-9 partner, and includes the addresses of those arrested.
