Friends & Neighbors: Two southeastern Connecticut farmers named finalist for award

Allyson Angelini of Full Heart Farm in Ledyard and Suzie Flores of Stonington Kelp Co. in Pawcatuck have recently been named finalists for the 2021-2022 National Outstanding Young Farmer award.

Angelini and Flores were celebrated as members of a group of eight young farmers from around the country. Finalists are selected for the award based on their progress in an agricultural career, extent of soil and water conservation practices, and contributions to the well-being of the community, state and nation.

“I haven’t stopped thinking about how wonderful it is to have two super small, first-generation, female specialty crop growers from southeastern CT be recognized for our work,” says Angelini.

The ceremony for both classes of finalists was held at the organization’s annual congress, hosted last month in Hilton Head, S.C. The 2021 congress was postponed due to the pandemic.

“As we gear up for our 11th growing season, it’s exciting to think about how much progress the local food scene in our area has made, thanks to a passionate community of dedicated growers, talented chefs, and a loyal community of eaters that support our work. I can’t wait to see what the next decade brings for our farm,” said Angelini.

The NOYF program has been selecting national winners since 1955. The program is sponsored by John Deere, administered by the Outstanding Farmers of America, and supported by the U.S. Jaycees, the National Association of Conservation Districts, and the National Association of County Agricultural Agents.
