Teen Talk: It’s time to hand off column to a new writer

Five years ago to the month, the title of an article in the Times caught my eye. I took note of “The Times They Are a-Changin’” not only for its Bob Dylan reference, but its call for newspaper contributors.

Thus began my journey to help teens and adults converse, reflect, and take refuge in shared experiences, culminating in the publication of my first book, “Teen Talk: Insight on Issues That Matter To Teens and The Adults Who Care About Them” (all royalties from the book go back into the publisher Teen Ink’s mission of helping teens share their voices).

But though my days as a teen are waning, this mission doesn’t have to end here. Lee Howard, the community editor of The Day newspaper, and I are looking for a teen writer to take over “Teen Talk.”

The times they are a-changin’ again. We are looking for a writer aged 13-18 to maintain a monthly column and discuss salient topics with teens and adults in the greater New London community. In addition to reaching a readership of over 100,000, I would help mentor any new columnist to help them adjust to their new role.

To apply for this column, please send a sample column to l.howard@theday.com and msproulx04@gmail.com by May 1, along with your name, age, and school.

To read previous “Teen Talk” columns, go to theday.com and type “Maria Proulx” or “Teen Talk” into the search engine.

Maria Proulx of Ledyard is a senior at St. Bernard School.
