In The Times: Trying out a new idea

We never stand pat here at the Times. Things are always evolving as we welcome new talent and try out new ideas.

One of the latest ideas is to coordinate with local public access channels to deliver interviews of some of our writers and the topics of our stories over local broadcast channels. We think hearing directly from the people in our pages will help bring the stories alive in new ways.

The first example of this new idea in action was on the Atlantic Broadband public access show "Stories Worth Telling with the Steels," featuring writer Nicholas Checker and historian Dale Plummer talking about the life of the controversial military commander John Mason, which was the subject of a three-part series in the Times.

Cate and Irving Steel of East Lyme will help tell these stories through their interviews, and will also be publishing stories in the Times related to these and other interviews they are conducting.

Related to our new efforts to reach beyond the pages of the Times, we are planning this spring to launch a new editorial advisory board for each of our editions. If you have an interest in being part of this board, please reach out to me at l.howard@theday.com and I will send you a Zoom link for our first meeting. The more responses I get from each town, the greater the chance that your voice will be part of our future editions!

The editorial advisory board will help us identify stories in each town that should be told and could also help guide us in finding newcontributors to the Times family.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Lee Howard is The Day’s community editor.
