New London Trees plans celebration for Arbor Day

New London — “Meet the Trees,” an Arbor Day celebration, will take place in Mahan Park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 30.

The event, sponsored by New London Trees, will include a proclamation for trees by Mayor Michael Passero. This year is the 150th anniversary of the first Arbor Day.

Children can play Tree Tic-Tac-Toe, looking for three of the nine tree species planted in the park. Over the past two years New London Trees, in partnership with the city's Public Works Department, has planted eight native trees, including white oak, American elm, honey locust, sugar maple, tulip tree, tupelo and pin oak.

New London Trees is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring New London's tree canopy through community planting and care, education and advocacy. Group members will talk about the trees and help attendees identify them, and offer information about the history of Mahan Park, which is named after a city mayor, and about the Charter Oak and what was hidden in it.

The park is surrounded by Broad, Vauxhall, Ledyard and Parker streets.
