    Friends & Neighbors: Fitch student selected for medical congress

    Aisha Hashimi, a junior at Fitch High School, has been selected as a delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders.

    The congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to becomes physicians or go into medical research fields.

    Her nomination was signed by Dr. Mario Capechi, winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Medicine and the Science Director of the National Acasdemhy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists.

    The two-day event at the end of March was virtual and over Zoom due to COVID-19. There will be another event in June, and the final one will take place in November. There were roughly 4,000 students from across the country in attendance.

    During the congress, students heard Nobel laureates and National Medal of Science winners talk about leading medical research; were given advice from Ivy League and top medical school deans on what to expect in medical school; witnessed stories told by patients who are lving medical miracles; and learned about cutting-edge advances and the future of medicine and medical technology.

    The purpose of the event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country interested in these careers and to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach that goal.
