Norwich Arts Center’s May exhibit will present cutting-edge photography from a number of local photographers through the month of May. Works include color and black-and-white photos as well as images artistically rendered with computers or special developing techniques.

The juried show will distribute $225 in prizes to three photographs judged to be the best. All photographs will be available for sale.

The exhibit opens at noon on Thursday, May 5, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 6. Photographers will be present to talk about their work.

Rhode Island photographer Paul M. Murray will judge the works. Although he has made no statement about his approach to assessment, his underlying philosophy of art is summarized in a quote by writer James Agee: “The artist’s task is not to alter the world as the eye sees it ... but to perceive the aesthetic reality within the actual world.”

The galleries at Norwich Arts Center are open from noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Gallery One features the monthly exhibits. Gallery Too presents work by local painters, photographers, and other artists as well as art-quality artisan products such as jewelry, cards and books.
