Groton — Groton Beautification Committee volunteers planted perennials around a new gateway sign welcoming visitors at the intersection of Route 1 and Route 117 on Tuesday.

The sign, installed by the town's Public Works Department last week, is one of a series of new gateway signs that will greet visitors at various spots around the town and city.

The committee, headed by Cindy Fortner, is focused on sprucing up a variety of vistas along Route 1 between Poquonnock Road and Groton Long Point Road.
