    Fundraiser planned for Haitian woman

Norwich — The Norwich Joint Catholic Cluster will host a benefit takeout dinner June 25 for a Haitian immigrant woman facing multiple medical and financial issues.

Joselaine Jean Pierre, 52, escaped Haiti after she suffered a severe beating by men who objected to her husband’s political views. She settled in Norwich in 2016 with her two youngest children. On May 30, 2017, she collapsed at home and was rushed to Backus Hospital. Sepsis from an unknown source left her in a coma for three months and hospitalized for nearly 2½ years. She emerged with amputated lower legs and all eight fingers, and kidney damage that requires dialysis three times a week.

Supporters in Norwich are raising money to pay for housing costs, transportation, food and support for her teenage daughter.

The fundraiser dinner will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at St. Mary’s Church hall, 70 Central Ave. in the Greeneville section of Norwich. The cost is $20 per person. For tickets, send checks made out to St. Mary Human Needs Fund, St. Mary’s Church, 70 Central Ave., Norwich, CT 06360. To order tickets, call the church at (860) 887-2565 and leave your name and contact phone number.
