Juneteenth 2022 is coming to the Hempsted Houses on Friday, June 10, and Saturday, June 11. The community is invited to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States in this celebration of freedom that will focus on the community and the African American history and inhabitants of the site. The Hempsted Houses are located at 11 Hempstead St., New London.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 10 with a film screening of Ife Franklin’s “The Slave Narrative of Willie Mae.” The movie is followed at 6 p.m. by a panel-led community conversation around the campfire facilitated by Joseph McGill of The Slave Dwelling Project.

On Saturday, June 11, the festival continues at 11 a.m. with the welcome address by City Council President Efrain Dominguez followed by the keynote speech by artist, author and activist Ife Franklin. The Master of Ceremonies for the Juneteenth Festival is director of youth & community engagement at the Garde Art Center, Curtis Goodwin.
