Let's Go: Old Town Mill holds summer open house

Celebrating the State of Connecticut's annual Connecticut Open House Day, New London's Old Town Mill will be open for free tours and refreshments from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 11.

New London's Old Town Mill will also be open for Summer Open House days every other Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting on July 9 through Aug. 20. (July 9, July 23, Aug. 6 and Aug. 20).

The Old Town Mill was originally built in 1650 by John Winthrop Jr., the founder of New London and later the governor of Connecticut. Listed on the National Historic Register, the mill is one of the oldest industrial sites in Connecticut. On Sept. 6, 1781, General Benedict Arnold burned the mill down during his raid on New London. The mill was rebuilt soon after on the original site.

The grounds of the Old Town Mill are located at 8 Mill St. New London, and are open year-round until sunset. The mill is also available to groups by special appointment.
