    Coming this weekend

News: After a chase last week, Old Saybrook and state police arrested two men who allegedly stole 1,000 gallons of cooking oil, and East Lyme police charged a man with stealing cooking oil a day later. What's behind these thefts, and what are people doing with stolen cooking oil?

Daybreak: The first New London Talent Show was presented in 2011 to showcase youth and the arts and promote healing and cooperation between ethnicities and culture after the murder of Matthew Chew caused simmering racial unrest throughout the region. The annual program has been wildly successful, and The Day takes a look back before the show's farewell production this Saturday.

Perspective: The death of celebrity entrepreneur Tony Hsieh was a New London story because it was caused by a fire on Pequot Avenue. Two Wall Street Journal reporters have written a book analyzing what happened to Hsieh at the end of his life, and how his efforts to produce a culture of "happiness" at work contributed to it. The story does not end with Hsieh's death.

Business: Uncertainty has settled over Silicon Valley as venture capitalists, tech founders and regular employees debate whether the pessimism in the sector is overblown or if tech really is the canary in the coal mine, already suggesting a broader downturn in the U.S. economy.
