Groton―Paddling against the inevitability of the soggy collapse of their creations, students enrolled in Early College Experience courses through the University of Connecticut took to the waters of Eastern Point Beach for cardboard boat races Friday.

A dozen boats from seven high schools converged on the beach following a morning of workshops hosted by UConn Avery Point. Teams competed in three heats with the winners and the next two fastest finishers entering the water for a championship round.

The Morgan School of Clinton with its Revolutionary War-themed entry USS Independence won its heat, and the overall title, bringing home the championship trophy. The Morgan School’s second boat, Miracle on Water, won the People’s Choice award, voted on by the participants.

The races returned this year after a two-year hiatus. UConn Avery Point students held their own races on Thursday.
