Sen. Needleman endorsed by Police Officers Association of Connecticut

Sen. Norm Needleman, D-Essex, has been endorsed by the Police Officers Association of Connecticut, the senator’s campaign announced Monday. The organization, which was founded in 2016 and represents about 5,000 officers in the state, cited his “strong support on issues that are important to police officers and their families.”

Needleman’s campaign cited his support for bills to prevent the sale of stolen catalytic converters, establish health care coverage for workplace-related post-traumatic stress, and provide 900 state troopers with pay increases.

“As First Selectman of Essex and the Civilian Chief of Police, I work alongside our police and fire departments and know firsthand the dedication, hard work and sacrifice our first responders bring to the job every day,” Sen. Needleman said in a press release. “I’m honored to receive the support and endorsement of the Police Officers Association amid the challenges they face in protecting public safety.”

Needleman voted in favor of the 2020 Police Accountability Act, which POACT said has many sections that are acceptable but also ones that “are of major concern,” including sections about use of deadly force, qualified immunity and mental health.

The 33rd Senate District includes Chester, Clinton, Colchester, Deep River, East Haddam, East Hampton, Essex, Haddam, Lyme, Portland, Westbrook and part of Old Saybrook. Needleman’s opponent is Republican Brandon Goff.
