Norwich ― Backus Hospital is set to receive more than $3 million in reimbursement from the federal government for costs incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency in a Wednesday news release announced the $3.02 million public assistance grant covers “the additional costs of operating safely” and handling increased patient loads during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The grant covers personal protective equipment and medical supplies as well as technology including oximeters, patient monitors, telemetry devices, respirators, and defibrillators purchased or leased between March 2020 and August 2021, according to the agency.

Other expenses to be reimbursed include additional technicians and staff, public information efforts, and cleaning and disinfection services and supplies, the release said.

FEMA identified its public assistance program as an essential source of funding in the aftermath of a federally declared disaster or emergency.

The agency to date has issued almost $593 million in public assistance grants across Connecticut for pandemic-related expenses.
