Potential changes to Seaport master plan offer insight into future amenities at museum

Mystic — A site plan application and master plan amendment application submitted to the Stonington Planning and Zoning Commission in early December provide more detail about Mystic Seaport Museum’s master plan, which specifies the uses allowed on its campus.

The changes call for a permanent, public exhibition space in the Rossi Mill. The design plan by Kent + Frost Landscape Architecture and Design in Mystic calls for partially relocating and expanding the proposed 33,000-square-foot Boat Hall in the mill, previously approved in 2019, to a 37,000-square-foot section of the mill to improve public access, aid in structural requirement compliance and provide for better use of the space.

The plan calls for a columned canopy to be added to the western end of the south elevation of the mill with stairs leading to a new entrance created by removal of existing windows. An elevator will be added directly next to the proposed stairs with ground level entry.

The plan also calls for roof replacement on the northeast corner of the building, where sections of the saw-tooth roof will be replaced by sloping roofs, while maintaining the saw-tooth brick façade.

The proposed landscaping outside the mill building will be minimalistic, including a seeded lawn, ornamental grasses, shrubbery and some shade trees, and single-fixture lighting will match the existing style at the museum.

The plan also calls for improving the sidewalks, adding wooden benches and bike racks.

Proposed modifications to the master plan include the addition of temporary exhibition banners on the Rossi Mill, which would change to highlight ongoing and upcoming exhibits, removal of three storage buildings and installation of a concrete pad for the upcoming restoration work on the L.A. Dunton, a 123-foot fishing schooner.

The plan also calls for the creation of a “pocket park,” or small park, on museum property at the corner of Greenmanville Avenue and Isham Street, and the creation of a water taxi dock, intended to alleviate some of the traffic in downtown Mystic.

The commission will discuss the applications at a future meeting.
