Brush fire burns five acres in Montville

Montville ― All four of the town’s volunteer fire companies spent three hours putting out a brush fire Friday afternoon.

Oakdale Fire Chief Micah Messer said the fire appears to have started on Cherry Lane from a chainsaw spark. He said the fire marshal is investigating. Messer said no buildings or cars were damaged.

Messer said the fire grew from Cherry Lane to Route 82 with embers hopping over to both sides of Route 82. He said overall the fire encompassed about five acres.

Messer said firefighters put out the blaze in three hours. He said the call came in at 1:49 p.m. and firefighters left the area at 6 p.m.

The Montville, Mohegan, Oakdale and Chesterfield fire companies responded to the fire with the help of other outside departments. Messer said firefighters from the state’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection were present as well.
