Vietnam Veterans Day event to be held in Norwich Saturday

Norwich ― The Norwich Area Veterans Council will hold its annual Vietnam Veterans Day Program at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Easter Seals Veterans Rally Point, 24 Stott Ave., in the Norwich Business Park.

The rain or shine event will commemorate those who served in Vietnam, stateside, or elsewhere during that era. It is open to all.

The veterans council in a news release described the “welcome home” received by Vietnam-era veterans as disgraceful.

“So we’re hoping that the prism of time will enable today’s citizenry to join us in honoring those who served, those who were wounded or killed in action (KIA); those who remain missing in action (MIA); and the families who continue to suffer the loss of their loved ones.”

U.S. Navy veteran and veterans council President John Waggoner will serve as the master of ceremonies. Father Phil Salois, Silver Star recipient and national chaplain of Vietnam Veterans of America, will speak and offer the benediction.

The veterans council will will go to Chelsea Parade in Norwich to change out the wreaths at the POW and Vietnam monuments immediately following the ceremony.

For additional information, call John Waggoner (860) 608-0472.
