New London elementary school to reopen Thursday after two-day building closure

New London ― Harbor Elementary School will reopen Thursday after being closed the past two days for building inspections after cracks appeared mostly on the second and third floors of the school building.

In an email to school staff Wednesday morning, Superintendent of Schools Cynthia Ritchie said test results had come back clear, and new cracks in the walls and ceilings did not cause any exposure to asbestos or lead.

The 103-year-old school was closed Tuesday as professional contractors inspected the interior and exterior infrastructure, as well as the cracks in the plaster of walls and ceilings. The school remained closed Wednesday as administrators awaited results.

“We are told there is a good chance the full week of rain (and wind) Connecticut experienced a few weeks ago could be the cause of the new interior breakage of plaster, as the very old bricks of the building continue to age,” Ritchie said in an email to families and staff Tuesday.

In her email, Ritchie said the district has continuously monitored the safety of the building every six months through periodic surveillance as required by the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act with the most recent surveillance being completed by an accredited agency in early 2023.

Ritchie on Wednesday said Harbor Elementary will continue to be monitored closely. She said additional conversations regarding long-term planning will take place during upcoming meetings of the Board of Education’s School Facilities and Program Design Committee.

She said the school board during its next meeting plans to approve an amended academic calendar for Harbor Elementary with its last day of school now being June 22.
