Groton ― Members of the World War II Submarine Memorial Committee touched up paint and added plants to the gardens around the newly restored memorial at 37 Bridge St. Tuesday.

The memorial, which contains the conning tower fairwater of the USS Flasher, had been covered with a tent and sandblasted to get rid of rust and then repainted. The restoration started in May and finished in August.

There will be a ceremony at the memorial at 10:20 a.m. Saturday for the crew of the USS Albacore (SS-218), which disappeared in World War II and was recently found off the coast of Hokkaido, Japan.

Family members of the lost crew members are expected to attend.

The Albacore, built by Electric Boat in Groton, is credited with sinking more than 10 Japanese ships in the Pacific Theater during WWII, including an aircraft carrier and two destroyers.
