Groton-New London Airport awarded $2.9M in federal funding

Groton ― The Connecticut Airport Authority has announced Groton-New London Airport is among the recipients of federal funding slated for airport improvements across the state.

Groton-New London Airport was awarded $2.9 million for an airfield lighting and signage replacement project, according to a news release.

“This important safety project includes the installation of new edge lighting and LED signs at the airport, improving the visibility of airfield resources for airport users,” the release states.

Overall, nearly $100 million from the Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program, Transportation Security Administration, and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will benefit airports in Connecticut.

“Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Bradley (International Airport) will upgrade its TSA baggage screening systems and expand ticketing counters — helping cut down lines and save travelers time,” Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said in a statement.

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn, said the funding “will help streamline the travel experience at Connecticut airports,” and also “create lots of good-paying jobs and make our state even more attractive for new companies to grow their businesses here.”

U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District, said: “This funding will be a game changer in supporting our airports’ safety, security, and operations and continuing the high-quality service the Connecticut Airport Authority provides to travelers.”

“We are very grateful to Governor Lamont and the state’s federal delegation for their strong advocacy on behalf of Connecticut’s airports,” CAA Board Chair Tony Sheridan said.

Bradley will receive more than $76 million towards a nearly $151 million project for a new baggage screening building; $18 million towards a $59 million project to improve passenger circulation; and $278,643 to continue studying a taxiway extension, the release states.

Hartford-Brainard Airport received about $2 million for the improvement of approach surfaces at the airport, the release states.
