Federal funding announced for southeastern Connecticut projects

Projects for the New London Police Department, Mystic Seaport Museum, and the Connecticut Audubon Society are among 58 federal grants announced Saturday for projects across the state.

More than $106 million in projects, requested by Sens. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and Chris Murphy, D-Conn., will be funded through the 2024 Minibus Appropriations bill approved by the U.S. Senate, Blumenthal announced in a news release.

“These federal funds are a fantastic win for our state,” Blumenthal said. “Connecticut can now count on millions of dollars for our most urgent needs — from increasing affordable housing to preventing and responding to domestic violence to improving our roads and transportation systems.”

    The grants announced include:

    · $743,000 for digital infrastructure improvements for the New London Police Department.

    · $800,000 for the Connecticut Audubon Society, Inc. to protect and restore the Lieutenant River habitat and riparian zone in Old Lyme.

    · $251,000 for Mystic Seaport Museum to preserve its historic small watercraft collection.

    · $500,000 for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to survey and test a reported shoal in the Stonington Harbor.

    · $500,000 for energy efficiency and climate control improvements for the Connecticut Audubon Society’s historic building in Old Lyme.

    · $400,000 to the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut for the Regional Innovation Center.

    · $800,000 to the state Department of Transportation for the New London Turnpike Bridge over the Yantic River in Norwich.

    · $2 million to the Sea Research Foundation (Mystic Aquarium) for threatened and endangered species conservation efforts.

    · $1 million for Sprague’s water pollution control facility upgrades.
