Early voting to be available for first time in Connecticut, starting with presidential primary

In-person early voting will be available for the first time in Connecticut, beginning with the Presidential Preference Primary, the League of Women Voters of Southeastern Connecticut reminded voters.

Registered voters can vote in-person four days before the April 2 primary election, on March 26, 27, 28 and 30. Early voting will take place in town/city halls from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The primary will be held 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 2.

Connecticut is a “closed primary” state, so only voters registered with one of the major parties may participate in the primary. Unaffiliated voters can still register with a party and participate. The deadline to affiliate was March 15 for online or by mail registrations, but residents may still register with a party by noon on April 1 in person with the Registrar of Voters or the Town Clerk in their hometowns.

Voters can check their affiliation and registration status at https://portaldir.ct.gov/sots/LookUp.aspx.

Absentee ballots are available for those unable to vote in person, and an application/excuse is required. More information about absentee ballots is available at the Secretary of the State’s website, https://portal.ct.gov/SOTS/Election-Services/Voter-Information/Absentee-Voting.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization working to protect and expand voting rights and ensure everyone is represented. The league’s non-partisan voter guide, Vote411.org, will be available after March 21.

More information is available by contacting info.lwvsect@gmail.com or the local town clerk or registrar of voters.
