    Local roundup: No. 4 Waterford baseball edges Fitch 7-6

    Waterford — Sonny Pezzello's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the fourth-ranked Waterford High School baseball team to a 7-6 win over Fitch on Thursday.

    Walker Sutman homered, doubled, singled and drove in two runs, Pezzello homered and drove in two runs, Matt Driscoll and Mike Burrows each had a single and a double and Peter Kiefer doubled and scored four runs for Waterford (8-1).

    Nick Helbig hit a three-run homer and Tyler Cady had two hits for Fitch (6-5), which has lost five of its last six games.  

    H.S. softball

    • Waterford scored three times in the seventh inning to break a deadlock against East Lyme and win 5-2. In the seventh, Ciana Chiappone singled for her third hit of the game, advanced to third on a hit by Rachel Miller and scored on a fielder's choice for a 3-2 lead. Gina McKittrick doubled to drive in Miller and McKittrick scored the third run of the inning on a single by Riley Mazzella. Chiappone also homered in the first and singled in the fifth. Miller, the winning pitcher, and McKittrick added two hits each for Waterford (6-3). East Lyme (4-5) scored in the first to tie the game on a single by Mya Delesdernier and took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a double by Olivia Quagan and a triple by Jaylyn Mueller.

    • Alexis Michon pitched a three-hitter with 16 strikeouts for Montville in an 8-0 victory over New London. Katelin Price drove in three runs for the Indians (7-2), with a hit and two runs scored, Emmiley Genua had a hit and an RBI, Abby Diamantini a hit and two runs and Michon doubled. Freshman Caylee Parker struck out 11 for New London (1-8) and allowed just four hits. Alexia Liriano, Finella Smith and Anaya Vega each had hits for the Whalers, who made nine errors.

    • Hannah Smith pitched a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts as Norwich Tech beat Parish Hill 9-1. Erin McBride, Kimberly Vu and Smith had two hits each for Norwich Tech (6-2). Smith scored three runs, Vu scored twice and McBride drove in three runs. 

    • Madison Sanborn pitched a two-hitter in Ledyard's 2-0 loss to Woodstock Academy. Sanborn struck out five for Ledyard (6-5). Hannah Wotton also pitched a two-hitter for Woodstock, which scored both runs in the fifth inning.

    H.S. boys' golf

    • Ryan Sadosky of Waterford was the medalist as the Lancers lost a pair of matches, falling to NFA 5-2 and Killingly 6-1 in an ECC Division II match. Sadosky shot a 2-over-par 37 at Great Neck Country Club. Nick Hynes and Tanner Correia halved their matches for Waterford (3-3, 1-2). Seamus Sullivan and Jackson Guertin won matches for Norwich Free Academy (4-3) and teammates Andrew Gromko and Andrew Postler halved their matches.

    • Peter Macadam and Corey Drummond shared medalist honors at 3-over-par 38 in lifting Old Lyme past North Branford 159-217 at Black Hall Club. Thomas Creagan added a 41 and Pat Looney a 42 for the Wildcats.

    • Stonington's Jack Glenn was the medalist with a 36 as the Bears beat Bacon Academy 6.5-0.5 in an ECC Division II match. Jacob Geary, Cooper Wall and Aidan Adams also won their matches for Stonington (3-0, 3-0) and teammate Grant Hamilton halved his match.

    • Colin Fahey earned medalist honors with a 39, as Fitch defeated Windham 7-0 at Windham Golf Club. Also winning matches for Fitch (3-0) were Charlie Bresnahan, Drew McCormack, Keegan Pierce and Nishant Patel.

    • Montville's Sam Gaboury shot a 40 to tie for medalist honors with Woodstock Academy's Mason Stewart as Montville split a pair of matches at Norwich Golf Course. Montville beat New London 6.5-.5 and lost to Woodstock 6-1 in an ECC Division II match. Jack Minas and Karl Siismets each had 57s for Montville (1-3, 0-2). Woodstock also defeated New London 7-0. New London is 1-5, 0-1.

    • Grasso Tech lost to O'Brien Tech in a CTC match 200-231. Ryan Smelser led Grasso (2-1-1) with a 58.

    • Wheeler opened its season with a 4.5-2.5 loss to Tourtellotte in an ECC Division III match. Sam Taylor and Seth Kosztala won their matches for the Lions and teammate Samson Hauptmann halved in his match.

    H.S. girls' golf

    • Caroline Eaton shot a 51 to lead Woodstock Academy past NFA 222-243. Haley Price and Jill Irvine each had 59s to pace NFA.

    H.S. boys' track

    • Sam Whittaker led a sweep of the 1,600 meters, finishing first in 4:30.9, and also won the 3,200 as East Lyme defeated Ledyard 109-41 in an ECC Division I meeting. East Lyme's Chris Abbey was second and freshman Fisher Macklin third in the 1,600. Also for the Vikings (2-1, 2-1), the 4x800 relay team of Matt Kung, Rob Avena, Ryan McCauley and Christian Wilson won in 8:42.6 and Akhil Chilakurthi won the 300 hurdles (42.5) and triple jump (39-3.5). Josh Morton qualified for the state meet in the discus (115-2) and Spencer Duthrie won the javelin (139-11). Collin Wiltshire won the 110 hurdles, Travon Brown the 100 and Carl Bien-Aime the high jump for Ledyard. East Lyme also beat New London 122-28 and Ledyard topped New London 85-65. New London's Jason Rivera won the 400 and Kahlil Ramcharit the high jump against East Lyme. Ledyard is 2-1, 1-1 and New London 1-3, 0-3.

    H.S. girls' track

    • Jamie Foster won three events as East Lyme beat Ledyard 96-51 and New London 100-26 in an ECC Division I tri-meet. Foster won the shot put (33-6.5), discus (89-10) and javelin (104-6) and teammate Katie Solinsky won the 400 (1:06.4) and long jump (14-3). Saige Deveau, Phoebe Provencher, Claire Mason, Chivalry Rukundo, Caitlyn Anderson, Alexis Burgess and Kaitlin Kluge also won events for the Vikings (3-0, 3-0) and teammates Karena Kung, Alicia Lan, Meghan McCauley and Katherine Harris were on winning relay teams.

    Olivia Crawford won two events for Ledyard, which beat New London 100-34. Crawford won the 100 hurdles (17.6) and 300 hurdles (51.6). Julia Paul won the 3200 for Ledyard (1-2, 1-1).
