    Local colleges: Conn men settle for 1-1 overtime tie with Amherst

    New London — Connecticut College and Amherst College battled to a 1-1 overtime tie in a New England Small College Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Tuesday.

    It was the first blemish of the season for the Camels (10-0-1, 6-0-1), who host Tufts (5-0-1 in the NESCAC) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in a game that will likely decide the regular-season conference championship.

    Uzii Dieng, assisted by Matt Butera, scored his third goal of the season in the 55th minute to give Conn a 1-0 lead, but Amherst (6-3-1, 3-3-1) tied the game eight minutes later on an unassisted goal by German Giammattei. It was only the second goal the Camels have allowed in 11 matches.

    Conn held an 8-6 edge in shots with goalie AJ Marcucci recording two saves.

    In other matches:

    • Greg Andreou scored 3:22 into overtime as Williams beat Coast Guard Academy 1-0 in a non-conference match. The Bears (4-6-3) had their four-game unbeaten streak snapped. Sophomore goalie Dakota Harich made five saves for Coast Guard, which was outshot 16-5.

    Women's soccer

    • Sophomore Felicia Lombardi scored in the 69th minute to lead Coast Guard to its third straight win, a 1-0 victory over Smith in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Freshman goalie Katharina Commins made seven saves for the Bears (7-4-1, 4-1-1), who tied a program record for most NEWMAC wins in a season.

    Volleyball

    • Wellesley outlasted Coast Guard 3-1 in the NEWMAC. Game scores were 25-21, 26-28, 25-19 and 25-18. Angelou Dunton led the Bears (14-7, 3-5) with 14 kills and 12 digs while Veronica Hine had 17 digs, Amanda Dake 16 digs and Nikki Sefcik had 23 assists and 10 digs.

    • Eastern Nazarene defeated Mitchell College 25-14, 25-19 and 25-21 in the New England Collegiate Conference. Ariana Carter had eight kills for the Mariners (1-12, 1-3) whiel Laurissa Amaker had five kills and 10 digs and Shyla Phillips-Krick had 18 digs.

    College honors

    • Mitchell freshman Grace Burns was named NECC Rookie of the Week in women's cross country. Burns recorded her fastest 5k time of the season last week at the James Earley Invitational, covering the course in 26:32.49. She helped the Mariners finish 26th overall in a deep field.

    • Mitchell College freshman Sam Gaboury of Montville was named NECC Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week in men's golf. Gaboury was the individual medalist at the Emmanuel College Saints Invitational last week, shooting a two-over par round of 74. Gaboury garnered the NECC's top weekly honor for the first time this fall, but the rookie honor was his fifth straight.

    • Waterford's Nisha Rajamohan, a member of the women's tennis team at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Andrea Valenica were named Doubles Team of the Week by the Liberty League. Playing at No. 2 doubles, Rajamohan and Valencia did not lose a game in posting 8-0 wins against opponents from Manhattanville and Western Connecticut.

    Men's tennis

    • Seniors Tom Hackett and Jack Phillips each won their singles matches and teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles as Coast Guard ended its fall season with a 5-4 win over Nichols on Monday. Hackett won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles while Phillips was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 5 singles. With the score tied 4-4, sophomore Kyle Fager clinched the match for the Bears with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles. Hackett and Phillips were 8-7 winners at No. 1 doubles while Arthur Wicke and Lucas Arora won 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.
