    Local colleges: Pointers' Brennan scores single-game record 57 points

    Groton — Senior Mia Brennan of Waterford scored a single-game record 57 points and tied a team record for steals with 14, powering the UConn Avery Point women's basketball team to a 119-20 win over Quinsigamond Community College on Tuesday.

    Brennan also added seven rebounds and five assists for the Pointers (7-9). She topped the previous record held by Tatyana LaFrance Boyce, who had 55 points against Bunker Hill in February 2017. LaFrance Boyce also had 14 steals in that game.

    Freshman Rebekah Sanders, a Waterford graduate, finished with 10 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals while Julitza Delgado had 18 points and seven steals and Miriam Dugas added 14 points and 11 rebounds.

    In other games:

    • Mitchell College lost its second New England Collegiate Conference game this season, falling to New England College 64-62. The Mariners (10-7, 9-2) were led by Amina Wiley (18 points, eight rebounds), Kate McCormack (13 points) and Le'Sandra Turner (12 points). The two teams are now tied for second place in the conference. Rene Hudson had 22 points for New England College (10-7, 9-2). 

    Earlier Tuesday, Wiley was named NECC Rookie of the Week for the third straight week. Wiley averaged 18.0 points, 12.3 rebounds and 2.7 steals during a 2-1 week while shooting 64.9 percent from the floor.

    • Eastern Connecticut State beat Connecticut College 66-57 in a nonleague game. Margaret Corcoran had seven points and eight rebounds for Conn (11-7) and teammates Kylie Caouette and Claire Gulbin came off the bench to score 10 each. Mya Villard had 12 points and nine rebounds for ECSU (11-6).

    Men's basketball

    • Senior Domenico Santiago led four Mitchell players in double figures, scoring 19 points to go with 18 rebounds in the Mariners' 79-75 win over Elms College in the NECC. It was the fourth straight win for Mitchell (11-6, 6-3), which also received contributions from Steffen Brunson (19 points), Matt Finke (13 points) and Hasani Williams (11 points, nine rebounds).

    • Waterford's Trevor Yeomans scored a 16 of his career-high 28 points in the second half as Avery Point rallied for a 66-53 win over Quinsigamond CC. The Pointers (7-12) outscored QCC 42-27 in the second half. Mitchell Holdmeyer added 12 points and 13 rebounds while East Lyme's JR Gandenberger finished with eight points, seven rebouinds and five assists.

    Women's hockey

    • Connecticut College's Jordan Cross scored a power play goal in the third period but the rally fell short as the Camels lost to Saint Anselm's 2-1 in non-conference action. Goalie Bailey Mertz made 28 saves for the Camels (8-6-2) while Erin Healy and Ellie Branka each had an assist.
