    Mitchell hosts NECC men's basketball title game on Saturday

    The Mitchell College men's basketball team, improbably as the No. 4 seed, will host the New England Collegiate Conference tournament championship game on Saturday at 2 p.m.

    The Mariners beat top seed New England College 87-85 in overtime in Thursday night's semifinal when Matt Finke hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Mitchell (18-9) hosts plays No. 6 Newbury in Saturday's title game. Newbury beat No. 2 Eastern Nazarene 74-73. The top seed hosts the NECC tournament final.

    Mitchell swept the season series with Newbury, winning 74-73 on Jan. 5 and 88-79 on Jan. 24. In Thursday's game, Finke scored 11 of his 22 points in overtime and Hasani Williams had 18 points and 10 rebounds.

    The Eastern Connecticut Conference boys' basketball tournament continues on Saturday with the semifinals at Waterford. The Division I semis will be broadcast live on theday.com, with No. 3 NFA playing No. 7 Woodstock Academy at 4 p.m., and No. 1 Waterford playing No. 4 Fitch at 6 p.m. The Division II semis have No. 1 St. Bernard playing No. 5 Plainfield at noon, and No. 2 Stonington playing No. 3 Griswold at 2 p.m.

    The Shoreline Conference boys' basketball tournament begins on Saturday with the quarterfinals. No. 2 Old Lyme hosts No. 7 Portland at 6 p.m.

    The Eastern Connecticut Conference will also hold its fencing championships at Griswold on Saturday. The event begins at 9:30 a.m. And the Connecticut College women's hockey team begins play on Saturday in the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament. The No. 7 Camels play at No. 2 Middlebury in a quarterfinal at 3 p.m.
