    Local roundup: Jacobson, Huta lead Eagles to second straight Nutmeg Conference title

    New London — Kyle Jacobson had two goals and three assists as the Eastern Connecticut Eagles scored four times in the second period and routed Tri-Town on Thursday, 7-2, to win its second straight Nutmeg Conference hockey tournament championship at Dayton Arena.

    Ryan Huta had three goals and an assist and Will Cannella had a goal and two assists for the Eagles (14-7-1), last season’s CIAC Division III champion.

    Evan Tower had a goal and an assist for Eastern Connecticut and Nellie Horvath, Trent Hughson, Devyn Jordan, and Ken Marino each added an assist.

    Tower and Jacobson were both named to the All-Nutmeg first team, while Cannella and Marino were selected to the second team.

    The Eagles will be seeded 14th in the Division II tournament, which starts next Monday.

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • Emily DeRoehn made nine of her 12 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter as No. 8 Old Lyme pulled away for a 53-44 win over No. 24 Shepaug Valley in the second round of the CIAC Class S tournament.

    The Wildcats (17-6) play at No. 1 Canton in the quarterfinals on Monday night at 7. Canton, the 2016 and 2017 S champions, beat No. 16 Somers 65-37.

    Britney DeRoehn had 13 points and two steals, Emily DeRoehn finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and three steals and Catey Battalino scored 10 for Old Lyme.

    "It was a solid effort,'' said Old Lyme coach Don Bugbee. "The kids played hard, both teams did.''

    The Wildcats led 37-30 after three quarters and went 10-for-15 from the line in the fourth quarter.

    Men's lacrosse

    • Coast Guard lost to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 12-11. Riley McNulty had four goals and an assist to lead Coast Guard (1-1) and Will Iorio had two goals and two assists. McNulty added three ground balls for the Bears.

    H.S. wrestling

    • New London's Jacob Commander (182 pounds) and Ledyard's Cole Dirico (138) will participate in the New England Championship on Friday and Saturday at the Providence Career and Technical Academy. Commander will face Jonah Potter of Wells (Maine) in the first round while Dirico will wrestle David Williams of Otter Valley (Vermont) in the first round.

    The Commander-Potter winner will wrestle James Danis of Essex (Vermont) in the second round while the Dirico-Williams winner will wrestle Tyler Glynn of Central Catholic (Mass.) in the second round. Wrestling begins Friday at 5 p.m. with the first round, second round and consolation first round. The tournament resumes on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the championship quarterfinals and will conclude with the championship and consolation finals at 4:45 p.m.

    College swimming

    • Coast Guard's John Westkott has been named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Men's Swimming Co-Coach of the Year. Westkott, in his 20th season, earned NEWMAC Men's Swimming Coach of the Year honors for the fourth straight season and the ninth time in his career. He shares the honor this season with Paul Bennett from WPI. Westkott has led the Bears to six conference championships (1999, 2001, 2004 and 2006-2008) and the team has a dual meet record of 152-43.

    • Coast Guard will send a record 11 swimmers to the NCAA Division III Championships as seven men and four women will represent the Bears in Greensboro, N.C. on March 20-23. Sophomore Sarah Passilla earned a spot in the 200 IM and will also swim 400 IM and the 100 freestyle. The 800 freestyle relay of Passilla, Kristen Durham-Young, Emily Benson and Josie McGuire earned an invite, Durham-Young will also swim the 200 freestyle and McGuire will swim in the 1,650 freestyle.

    On the men's side, the 200 medley relay of Patrick Jackson, Chasse Sodemann, Tyler Dominick and Joe Rodriguez earned a spot along with the 200 freestyle relay team of Dan Jenkins, Rodriguez, Dominick and John Pompay. Rodriguez will also swim in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Eric Fuhs will compete in the 100 breaststroke, 200 IM and 200 breaststroke. Sodemann will swim in the 100 breaststroke, 200 IM and the 200 breaststroke.

    Sun announce preseason schedule

    • The Connecticut Sun will begin their 17th season with a two-night preseason doubleheader involving the Atlanta Dream, Dallas Wings, and New York Liberty on May 13-14 at Mohegan Sun Arena. Dallas plays Atlanta at 5 p.m. on the first day while New York plays Connecticut at 7. On the second night, Atlanta plays New York at 5, and the Sun play Dallas at 7. Connecticut ends the preseason vs. New York in Albany (May 19, 2:30 p.m.). The Sun open the regular season at home against Washington on May 25 (7:30 p.m.).
