    Local roundup: Coast Guard softball opens NEWMAC play with a sweep

    Northampton, Mass. — The Coast Guard Academy softball team opened New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play by sweeping Smith College 9-8 and 16-4 in a doubleheader on Sunday.

    Kayla Sowers' RBI double in the top of the sixth inning broke an 8-8 tie in the opener. Courtney McKenna had two hits and drove in four runs for the Bears in Game 1 and was 4-for-4 with two doubles in Game 2.

    Coast Guard (8-6) started off the second game with 10 runs in the first inning. Carly Hattman was 3-for-3 with a double and Charlee Kraiss drove in five runs.

    Baseball

    • Mitchell College collected 23 hits in a 30-0 win over Husson in the first game of a doubleheader and won the second game, 9-1. Steve Cochrane was 5-for-8 with six runs, two home runs and 10 RBI for the Mariners (9-5). Hunter Yaworski, John-John Jose and Montville's Dougie DelaCruz also homered in the opener, which Mitchell led 15-0 after an 11-run second inning. Eric Marriott was 6-for-7 with seven runs and Justin Johnson scored seven times for Mitchell.

    • Coast Guard was swept by Wheaton in a NEWMAC doubleheader, losing the opener 5-0 and the second game 9-1. Coast Guard's Jeremy Lhotka homered with two outs in the ninth inning in the nightcap for the Bears' lone run. Will Stephens doubled in the first game for Coast Guard (6-6, 0-2).

    • Michael Woodworth was 4-for-5, including a home run, as UConn beat Houston 9-3 in an American Athletic Conference game. John Toppa and Chris Winkel had two hits each and Woodworth scored three times for the Huskies (13-8, 2-1). 

    Women's swimming

    • Connecticut College finished 15th at the NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday in Greensboro, N.C. The Camels had 85 points and finished the four-day event with three school records. The 400-yard freestyle relay of Vaughn Ammon, Kenzie Healy, Maddie Ford and Olivia Haskell were seventh in a school-record time of 3:25.83 to earn NCAA All-America honors. They broke the school record earlier in the day in the preliminary round (3:26.26).

    Senior captains Maeve Wilber and Haskell also broke school records, Wilbur in the 200 backstroke (2:03.18, 17th place) and Haskell in the 100 free (50.64), 10th place), the latter who broke her own school record. Wilbur topped the 2:04.60 set by Julia Klier in 2017.

    Coast Guard's Josie McGuire placed 26th in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:28.36. The Bears' 400 freestyle relay of Emily Benson, Kristen Durham-Young, McGuire and Sarah Passilla were 22nd (3:30.57) and Passilla was 50th in the 100 freestyle (52.65).

    Men's swimming

    • Joe Rodriguez earned his third All-America honor of the weekend as he placed seventh in the 100 freestyle to close out the NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday at Greensboro, N.C. Rodriguez set the school record (44.53) to place fifth in the preliminaries and earned a spot in the championship where he finished seventh (44.88).

    Coast Guard finished 13th with 81 points. Eric Fuhs earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 200 breaststroke as he tied for 13th (2:01.07) while Chasse Sodemann was 30th (2:18.38). The 400 freestyle relay of Dan Jenkins, Rodriguez, Patrick Jackson and John Pompay were 21st in 3:05.17.

    Women's track

    • Connecticut College won four events at the season-opening Golden Ram Invitational on Saturday at West Chester, Pa. Leading the way was Emily Senatore, who broke the school record in the discus with a throw of 139-feet, 8-inches, and teammate Koko Mensah won the shot put at 43-10. Meredith Cronin won the 5,000 in a time of 18:15.37 and the 4x100 relay team of Ellie Ebby, Alicia Palmer, Sarah Clark and Ivana Lamptey won with a time of 50.57. In the 100 hurdles, Leila Alfaro was third and Shannon Kennedy was fourth.

    Men's track

    • Ian McAleer of Connecticut College picked up a pair of wins on Saturday as the Camels opened the season at the Golden Ram Invitational at West Chester, Pa. McAleer won the 100 with a time of 11.25 and teamed with Jake Beloin, Sebastian Cox and Matt Sambor to win the 4x100 relay. Also picking up wins for Conn were Mike D'Onofrio in the javelin (168-5) and Ben Vazquez in the 1,500 (4:07.43).
