Local roundup: East Lyme girls win Class L soccer tourney opener

East Lyme — Meredith Healy scored a pair of goals as 13th-seeded East Lyme defeated No. 20 Maloney 3-0 in the first round of the CIAC Class L girls' soccer tournament on Tuesday.

The Vikings (10-4-4) will play at No. 4 Ledyard in Thursday's second round at 2 p.m. The Colonels had a first-round bye.

The game was scoreless until Healy scored her first goal, unassisted, with just one minute, 30 seconds left in the first half.

Freshman Serena McCollum made it 2-0 just 1:20 into the second half with an unassisted goal and Healy, assisted by Abby Belleville, scored her second goal with 23 minutes left.

East Lyme coach Rachel Redding was thrilled to see that her young team didn't get frustrated in the first half when the Vikings dominated but couldn't break through until late in the first half.

"That was good to see," Redding said. "It showed they didn't give up and wait until the second half. It got them pumped up and it carried into the second half. It gave them confidence. For a lot of them, this was their first state game and that (first goal) gets the jitters out."

The Vikings held a 12-1 edge in shots and goalie Avery Owen made just one save.

    In other first-round games:

    • No. 11 Haddam-Killingworth, the Shoreline Conference tournament champion, edged No. 22 Waterford 2-1 in a Class M match at Old Saybrook. The Lancers, who finish 6-7-4, had taken a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the second half on a goal by Khay Hatcher (Claudia Blazquez assisted), but H-K took advantage of the wind and converted a pair of free kicks, including the game-winner with 12 minutes to play. McKenzie Gregory made two saves in goal for Waterford, which held a 13-5 edge in shots.

    • The season also came to an end for three other local schools. No 24 Norwich Free Academy was eliminated by No. 9 New Canaan 3-1 in Class LL, No. 24 Montville lost to No. 9 Ellington 3-0 in Class M, and No. 16 St. Bernard was ousted by No. 17 Cromwell 6-1 in Class S.

    H.S. field hockey

    • Goalie Claire Evans stopped all four shots she faced in a shootout as fourth-seeded Stonington defeated No. 12 Old Saybrook 2-1 (2-0 in the shootout) in the Class S first round. The Bears (13-3-2) advance to Thursday's quarterfinals at No. 4 Westbrook at a time to be determined.

The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie in regulation and then during a pair 7v7 overtime periods. Grace Adams gave Old Saybrook a 1-0 lead in the second half before Ellie Korinek tied it for Stonington less than a minute later. In the shootout, Teagan O'Brien and Korinek scored for the Bears while Evans made a sliding save on the Old Saybrook's first attempt, blocked a penalty stroke on the second attempt, didn't allow the Rams' third player to get a shot off and then blocked the fourth attempt to preserve the win.

Both teams had 17 shots and six penalty corners with Evans making nine saves for Stonington and Wendy Bowden making 12 saves for Old Saybrook.

    Men's basketball

    • CCRI opened the second half on a 38-8 run to rally past UConn Avery Point 89-73 in Groton. The Pointers (1-2) led 48-29 at halftime. Tyler Zegray scored 17 points to lead Avery Point while Montville's John Domijan had 13 and East Lyme's J.R. Gandenberger added 11.
