    Local roundup: Kane leads Coast Guard past Mitchell

    New London — Justin Kane scored 17 of his career-high 25 points in the first half as Coast Guard beat visiting Mitchell College 90-65 in a nonleague men's basketball game on Thursday night.

    Kane hits three consecutive 3-pointers in a span of 52 seconds as Coast Guard jumped out to a 15-2 lead under four minutes into the game and the Bears, who led by as many as 40 cruised to victory. Freshman Madison Maloney had 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, Packy Witkowski added 15 points, Noah Baldez scored and Tyler Perez had 10 points and nine rebounds for Coast Guard (3-2).

    Matt Finke led Mitchell (1-2) with 20 points while Julius Hemingway scored 11 and Jalen Benson of New London and Dra Harrison had six rebounds each.

    • Waterford's Trevor Yeomans scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds at Avery Point beat Springfield Tech 71-65. Cyrus Sprague had 13 points, Mitchell Holdmeyer scored 10 and Tyler Zegray had seven assists and seven steals for the Pointers (3-5).

    Women's basketball

    • Rebekah Sanders of Quaker Hill had 25 points, 27 rebounds and nine steals as Avery Point beat Springfield Tech 80-66. Sarah Wisniewski had 24 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals, Kalianna Dingui had 13 points and six rebounds and Julitza Delgado had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Pointers (5-1), who have won five straight.

    • Connecticut College lost to Roger Williams in a nonleague game, 62-58. Claire Gulbin came off the bench to score 25 points and Dana Muckstadt and Nancy Coulverson had seven rebounds each for Conn (2-2).

    Girls' swimming

    • Nikki Hahn had a second-place finish and a third-place finish as she helped lead East Lyme to a third-place finish in the CIAC Class M Championships in New Haven on Wednesday. Hahn was second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.68 and took third in the 200 individual medley at 2:09.89. East Lyme finished with 427 points, trailing only champion North Haven (622) and Hand (599.5). The Old Lyme/Valley Regional/Old Saybrook co-op was sixth with 334.5.

    East Lyme's Grace Vlaun was second in the 200 freestyle at 1:58.30 and Katie Keating was the only other East Lyme individual to make the top six, coming in fourth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.54. The Vikings' 200 medley relay team of Ashwini Sahasrabudhe, Hahn, Keating and Vlaun finished second in 1:51.34 and the team of Keating, Lauren Hinckley, Vlaun and Hahn came in third in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:41.10.

    Old Lyme placed in a pair of relays. The team of Laura Day, Helen Day, Connie Pan and Grace Sweeney was third in the 400 freestyle with a time of 3:45.80 and the 200 medley team of Pan, Helen Day, Sweeney and Loretta Cecchini was fourth in 1:55.81.

    Sydney Crawford of Lyman Memorial/Windham/Parish Hill was second in the 100 freestyle (53.61) and fifth in the 50 freestyle (25.16).

    College honors

    • Coast Guard had five players, four on the defensive side of the ball, named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference all-conference football team as second-team selections.

    Senior cornerback Patrick Crowley, senior defensive lineman R.J. Robiskie, junior defensive lineman Philip Orlando and junior linebacker Eugene Bizer were named from the defense while junior wide receiver Justin Moffatt was the only player on offense.

    Crowley earns second team honors for the third straight season. He was tied for the NEWMAC lead with four interceptions this season and was second on the team with 66 tackles, 3.5 for loss and a team-high nine pass breakups, which was tied for the second most in the conference.

    Moffatt, a first team selection last season, led the NEWMAC with 66 receptions and was second with a career-high 872 yards to go with five touchdown receptions.

    Orlando, Robiskie and Bizer earned All-conference honors for the first time. Orlando led the NEWMAC with 13 tackles for loss and eight sacks and finished with 59 tackles despite missing the final two games of the season.

    Robiskie, who also missed the final two game of the season, was tied for second in the NEWMAC with 7.5 sacks he had 38 tackles on the season.

    Bizer led the NEWMAC with 110 tackles, 18 more than anyone in the conference. He had a league-high 74 solo tackles. He was second on the team with 8.5 tackles for loss and added two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a sack.
