    Local colleges: UConn baseball team rallies to beat No. 1 Michigan 8-7

    Port St. Lucie, Fla. — UConn battled back from an early 5-0 deficit to defeat Michigan, the top-ranked team in the nation, 8-7 on Friday afternoon at the New York Mets' spring training complex.

    The Huskies (2-2) scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth when Pat Winkel led off the inning with a double and scored on a base hit by Christian Fedko.

    It was UConn's first lead of the game.

    Caleb Wurster came on and locked down his first save of 2020 with a scoreless ninth as the Huskies posted their first win over a No. 1 team sending defeating Notre Dame during the 2001 season in South Bend, Ind.

    Stonington's Kevin Ferrer, a redshirt freshman, had an RBI single in the second for his first career hit and later tied the game a 6-6 in the sixth with an infield out that scored Paul Gozzo.

    UConn pitchers combined to strike out 17 Michigan hitters, including six by sophomore Will Lucas over 2.1 innings. Freshman Pat Gallagher followed with six strikeouts over three innings.

    The Huskies and Wolverines resume their three-game weekend series on Saturday at 2 p.m.

    Men's swimming

    • Coast Guard Academy All-American Joe Rodriguez won the 50 freestyle on Day 2 of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference championship meet at MIT. Rodriguez finished in 20.04 seconds to earn an invite to the NCAA Division III Championship. The Bears' 200 freestyle relay of Dan Jenkins, Rodriguez, Tyler Dominick and Devin McClure earned all-conference honors with a second-place finish in a school record 1:21.59 (qualifying for the nationals), while CGA's 400 medley relay of McClure, Eric Fuhs, Derek Ledford and Rodriguez placed second in 3:20.76. McClure added a second in the 500 freestyle (4:32.39) and Christian Lower was fourth in the 200 IM (1:51.50). MIT leads with 519 points and Coast Guard is second with 400.

    • Charlie Adl placed fifth in the 500 freestyle (4:35.25) for Conn College on Day 2 of the NESCAC Championships. Adl teamed with AJ Steininger, Marc Stern and Mitchell Lockwood to place sixth in the 400 medley relay (3:24.22), and with Julien Legros, Neal Mahoney and Lockwood to finish seventh in the 200 freestyle relay (1:23.57). Williams (832.5 points) leads through 10 events and Conn is eighth place (263.5).

    Women's swimming

    • Coast Guard's Sarah Passilla broke her own school record and defended her title in the 200 IM (2:05.41 on Day 1 of the NEWMAC Championships to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship. Josie McGuire added a second in the 500 free (5:01.71) for the Bears, who are in fifth place with 240.5 points.

    Men's hockey

    • Benjamin Freeman scored the tying goal with 56 seconds left in regulation and Alexander Payusov scored the game-winner 19 seconds into overtime to lift UConn past Boston University 4-3 in Hockey East. Benjamin Freeman had a goal and two assists, Carter Turnbull had a goal and an assist and Kale Howarth scored for UConn (13-13-4, 10-8-2). Also, Tomas Vomacka added 23 saves. Case McCarthy, Jack DeBoer and Cam Crotty scored for the Terriers (12-10-8, 9-6-5).

    • Pat Geary and Bradley Ingersoll both scored second-period goals to lift Bowdoin past Conn College, 2-1, in a NESCAC game. Brett Stirling scored and Avery Gobbo had 22 saves and an assist for Conn (10-11-2, 6-9-2).
