    CGA's Detwiler named New England Wrestler of the Year

    New London — Coast Guard Academy's Paul Detwiler, who had a perfect season cut short when the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the NCAA Division III Championships, was named the New England Wrestling Association Wrestler of the Year on Monday.

    Detwiler, a sophomore wrestling at 184 pounds for the Bears, was 28-0, including 18 bonus point victories, and became only the second wrestler in Coast Guard history to win an individual title at the All Academy Championship, a tournament featuring military schools from Divisions I, II and III.

    Detwiler also championships at the Doug Parker, Ted Reese, and Jim Aguilar tournaments, was the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the NEWA Dual championships, won the NCAA Division III Northeast Region tournament, and was seeded second at the national championships.

    The Marine and Environmental Science major was also named to the Scholar All-American team with a 3.74 GPA.

    Coast Guard also placed four wrestlers on the NEWA first team in Phil Rogers (165), Detwiler, Jon Wagner (197) and Patrick Irwin (heavyweight), while AJ Aeberli was named to the second team.

    Caden Mareno (133) and Montville's Noah Caskey (141) earned NEWA honorable mention honors while Liam Logue (125), Mareno, Caskey and AJ Pagliarulo (149) earned spots on the All-Rookie team.

    The Bears were seventh in the NEWA with a team GPA of 3.197 with 14 cadet-athletes named to the NEWA All-Academic team: Kenji Beato, Jeremy Berson, Detwiler, JD FitzPatrick, Jerad Habben, Irwin, Wagner, Nick Moreno, Rogers, Aeberli, Logue, David McCullough, George McBurney and Jessup Pawelczyk.
