Local roundup: CIAC won't rule out partial spring season just yet

Cheshire — The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference still won't rule out attempting to salvage some of its spring sports season, even though Gov. Ned Lamont announced Thursday afternoon that he was extending school closings until May 20.

The CIAC, in a release later Thursday, said Gov. Lamont's announcement "provides a timeline for the CIAC to consider regarding spring sport opportunities. CIAC administrative staff will have more detailed conversations with superintendents, principals, athletic directors, member leagues, medical professionals, and coaches over the next week and half."

The release concluded, "The CIAC Board of Control will meet on April 23 to review feedback from each group and discuss safe and realistic spring sport experiences."

Since delay the start of the spring season on April 4, CIAC officials have been discussing various scenarios that would allow schools and conferences to play a reduced season in order to salvage some of the spring schedule and possibly extend play until the end of June in order to state tournaments.
