    State suspends Legion baseball season

The Connecticut State American Legion Baseball Committee announced on Monday that the 2020 season has been suspended.

"It is with great disappointment that we announce that the 2020 Connecticut State American Legion baseball season has been suspended,'' said state chairman David Greenleaf in a release. "The National American Legion has shut down all sponsorship and all involvement in baseball for the 2020 season.

"The Department of Connecticut has also shut down all sponsorship. As a result there is no insurance for our teams at this time and without insurance we cannot play or conduct any baseball activities.''

They are exploring ways to play independently and will make a decision by June 1.

The decision ends the chance of there being a season locally in Zone 6. Teams can't use logos or anything else that identifies them as being connected with the American Legion.

Zone 6 has nine teams in its senior program and seven in its junior program. Senior teams include Niantic, Waterford, Norwich, Ledyard/Pawcatuck, Jewett City, Danielson, Moosup, Tri-Town and Willimantic.

"The likelihood of anything happening this summer isn't high,'' said Zone 6 Commissioner John Krot. "I'm not too optimistic.''

The organization announced on April 19 that the national and regional tournaments wouldn't be held, but left open the chance that states could still hold tournaments. Now, teams will be left to decide is they want to play on as independents, wait until the fall, or just start planning for the summer of 2021.
