    Local roundup: Avery Point wins opener in regional baseball tourney

    Rochester, N.Y. — Old Lyme's Liam Milewski pitched a one-hitter as UConn Avery Point defeated SUNY-Orange 8-0 in the first round of the NJCAA Division II Subdistrict baseball tournament on Friday at Monroe Community College.

    The game was called after seven innings due to the mercy rule.

    The Pointers (5-8) will play host Monroe in the winners' bracket on Saturday at 1 p.m.

    Milewski struck out 12 for Avery Point, which broke the game open with a seven-run fourth against Orange (4-17). Jason Ostrowski drove in two that inning with a ground rule double and Tim Hanlon, who finished 2-for-3, added a two-run single.

    Trey Moran reached base four times for the Pointers and scored a pair of runs.

    Women's track & field

    • Coast Guard Academy's Maeve Roach finished second in the 5,000 at the All-New England championship meet at Central Connecticut to earn All-New England honors. Roach finished in a season best 17 minutes, 7.41 seconds for the Bears against competition that included Division I and II athletes.

    Also for the Bears, Emma Sims placed 11th in the 10,000 meters with a career-best time of 39:06.60 while Mia Huncharek ran a career-best 18:10.41 in the 5,000 meters to place 13th,

    Leilani Salang was tenth in the hammer with a throw of 150 feet, 3 inches and Madison Garrigus was 19th in the pole vault (10 feet, 2 inches).

    H.S. softball

    • Norwich Tech remained unbeaten in the Connecticut Technical Conference with a 19-7, 5-innng softball victory over Ellis Tech. The Warriors (10-2, 9-0) were led by Morgan Cook, who had three hits, including a home run, and scored four runs. Gabby Fedus added three hits and three RBI, Emily Grant had three hits and scored three runs, and Avery Sulman and Elisa Barry each had two hits and two RBI.

    • Kaelin Waldron pitched a one-hitter, losing her perfect game bid when Killingly's Emily Carpenter singled with one out in the seventh, as Griswold rolled to a 12-0 Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II victory. Waldron did not walk a batter and struck out 15 for the Wolverines (12-1, 12-1) while Lucia Cecchi had four hits and drove in five runs, Samantha Falco had four hits and scored three runs and Sydney Lickwola had three hits, including a double.

    • Morgan Tainter had three hits and Tessa McLaughlin hit a pinch hit home run as Norwich Free Academy outlasted Stonington 8-4 in an ECC Division I game. Tessa Hospod and Gemma Peterson added two hits apiece for the Wildcats (4-7, 2-7) and Jillian Dykema had a double. Mandy Stepski, Phoebe Werling and Carly Constantine each had a single and double for the Bears (7-5, 7-5) while Carli LoPresto added a pair of hits.

    H.S. baseball

    • Old Lyme exploded for 17 hits on the way to a 15-4 victory over Portland in a Shoreline Conference game under the lights at Palmer Field in Middletown. Jesper Silberberg was 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBI for the Wildcats (7-9, 7-9) while Tait Sawden was 4-for-5 with a double, three RBI and two runs, Colbe Andrews was 4-for-5 with a double, two runs and two RBI, and Jaden Reyes was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Mav Swaney struck out eight over five innings to earn the win.

    • Logan Avin allowed only two hits and struck out four over five strong innings as No. 4 Waterford rolled to a 12-2 ECC Division I victory over Montville. Connor Podeszwa, Sean Salvador and Jackson Long had two hits apiece for the unbeaten Lancers (12-0, 11-0) while Isaiah Gallagher had a triple and RBI for the Indians (6-5, 6-5) and Derrell Mitchell also had a hit.

    • Javion Velez went 3-for-4 with a double and scored two runs as Grasso Tech beat Windham Tech 16-6 in a five-inning CTC game at Eastern Connecticut State University. Reynaldo Hidalgo added two hits, two runs and two RBI for the Eagles (5-5, 5-4) while Tito Arias had a single, triple and two runs and Randy Vidal scored three runs.

    H.S. boys' tennis

    • Stonington beat Waterford 7-0 in an ECC Division I match. Tucker Callahan, Matthew Turrisi and Jackson Conlon won their matches for the Bears (9-2, 7-2), who also won a match by forfeit. The teams of Conrad Tobiassen-Joshua Lord, Owen Grant-Chase Williams and Peter Previty-Ben Mahoney won to complete the sweep. Waterford is 3-9, 3-8.

    H.S. girls' tennis

    • Fitch swept doubles play en route to a 5-2 win over NFA in an ECC Division I match. Julia Meilguj and Fiona Kennedy won their matches for Fitch (7-4, 6-4) and the teams of Kristine Lee-Fiza Shariff, Ariana Timmerman-Anna Servidio and Michaela Ellis-Sophie Ash won the clinch the win. Sarah Ericson and Paige Raposo won matches for NFA (6-5, 5-5).

    • Old Lyme didn't drop a set in a 7-0 win over Portland in a Shoreline Conference match. The Wildcats (15-0) can complete an unbeaten regular season with a win over North Branford on Monday. Abigail Sicuranza, Callie Bass, Sam Tan and Livie Bass won their matches along with the teams of Lauren Wallace-Alexis Fenton, Fiona Hufford-Izzy Reynolds and Sophia Ortoleva-Elaina Morosky.

    • St. Bernard beat Montville 7-0 in an ECC Division II match. Zhuing Gao, Sasha Manzione, Olivia Busher and Meri Kambolli won their matches for the Saints (3-3, 3-2) along with the teams of Julia Ferris-Theany Nguyen, Carmela Ranquel-ArihJey Villon-Nahue and Tian Richardson-Ava Little. Montville is 1-7, 0-7.

    H.S. boys' lacrosse

    • James Deichler scored three goals as Fitch defeated Waterford 7-4 in an ECC Division I game. Evan Salen and Josh Letellier added two goals apiece for the Falcons (6-3, 4-2) while Jackson Huta had a goal and an assist for the Lancers (5-6, 2-4) and Anthony Stone, Olivier Searle and Joe Wyatt each scored once.

    H.S. girls' lacrosse

    • Lily Tomczik scored 12 goals as Montville cruised to a 20-11 victory over Wheeler/Grasso Tech in an ECC Division II match. Maddie Gould added three goals for the Indians (9-2, 7-1) while Lindsey Beavan had two goals and two assists and Madi Price scored a goal. Gracey Armstrong led the Lions (2-8, 2-8) with six goals and Leah Pion scored twice.

    • Dani Bruno scored six goals as East Lyme remained unbeaten with an 18-1 win over Waterford in an ECC Division I game on Thursday night. Ryan Nagle added two goals and four assists for the Vikings (10-0, 8-0) while Nancy Alden and Skylar Provencher added two goals apiece and Meredith Healy and Meg Nagle had one goal and one assist each. Marin Mahoney, assisted by Carly Holdridge, scored the lone goal for Waterford (3-7, 2-6).

    H.S. boys' golf

    • Woodstock Academy's Kyle Brennan shot a 41 to earn medalist honors, but host Bacon Academy won the ECC Division II match 5-2 at Chanticlair GC. The Bobcats improved to 7-5, 6-2.

    H.S. boys' volleyball

    • Rockville defeated Norwich Tech 25-5, 25-10 and 25-10. Cole Williams had three digs, three kills and an ace for the Warriors (0-4) while Tenzin Samten added five digs and two kills. Rockville is 7-6.

    H.S. boys' track and field

    • Fitch swept a tri-meet at Windham on Thursday, edging the host Whippets 79-68 and beat Killingly 122-26. Kheaven Kershaw won the 110 hurdles (17.1 seconds) and 300 hurdles (47.0) for the Falcons (4-2) while Thomas Williams won the 100 dash (11.2) and joined Fernando Correas, Nimyel Gamboa and Gavin Asciolla to win the 4x100 relay (45.5).
