Local roundup: NL to face Braintree (Mass.) in New England Babe Ruth semis

New London will play Braintree (Mass.) in Tuesday's semifinals of New England Babe Ruth 13-15 baseball tournament at Trumbull High School.

The game will start at 10 a.m., and will be followed by the second semifinal between host Trumbull and Lamprey River (N.H.) at 1 p.m.

The championship game is scheduled for Wednesday at 10 a.m.

New London, the Connecticut state champion, finished 3-0 in pool play and received a bye into the semifinals. Braintree advanced with a 7-1 win over North Providence-Smithfield (R.I.) in Monday's opening round.


• The Pittsfield Suns swept an FCBL doubleheader from the Norwich Sea Unicorns, winning both games in walkoff fashion. Pittsfield (26-21) won the opener 1-0 by scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh, then rallied from a 3-1 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the second game 4-3.

Brad Lombardi (Boston College) pitched six shutout innings for the Unicorns (22-28) in the opener, scattering six hits while striking out eight, while Ian Battipaglia (Franklin Pierce) went 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored in the second game for Norwich.
