    Local roundup: Unbeaten Waterford scores late goal to edge NFA 1-0

    Waterford — Amarys Jimenez scored on a breakaway with five minutes remaining as Waterford remained unbeaten with a 1-0 girls' soccer win over Norwich Free Academy on Wednesday night.

    Jimenez ran onto a long punt by goalie Mckenzie Gregory that bypassed NFA's back line to break the scoreless tie for the Lancers (3-0), who held a 7-4 edge in shots.

    Gregory and Holly Gray combined for three saves in goal for Waterford. NFA is 0-1-2).

    In other games:

    • Lily Antonio, assisted by Meredith Healy, broke a scoreless tie with 17:35 remaining to give East Lyme a 1-0 victory over Killingly. Lily Massung made four saves for the Vikings (2-1), who held a 14-1 edge in shots.

    • Katie Pierce, assisted by Katlyn Melinosky, scored with 7:11 left in the second overtime to give Wheeler a 1-0 victory over New London. Addie Hauptmann made 12 saves in goal for the Lions (1-1), who held a 25-12 edge in shots. New London is 0-2.

    • Megan Armstrong scored two goals and Jess English added a goal and an assist as Ledyard defeated Tourtellotte 4-0. Maddy Poulton also scored for the Colonels (1-1-1) while Maddie McLeod and Sarah Bailey each added assists.

    • Skylar Gustavsen her second goal just 1:07 into the second half to break a 2-2 tie and Bacon Academy went on to defeat Fitch 5-1. Gustavsen and freshman Audrey Palmer each finished with two goals and one assist for the Bobcats (1-1-1), while another freshman, Liz Glover added one goal and one assist. Fitch is 0-4.

    • Sienna Sferrazza had two goals and three assists as St. Bernard rolled to a 6-0 win over Windham. Angelica Tompkins added two goals and an assist for the Saints (1-1-1) while Elizabeth Hannaford and Alyssa Hernandez also scored goals and Gracyn Barnhill and Aubree Nygaard each had an assist.

    Boys' soccer

    • Fabricio Gonzalez scored three goals as Grasso Tech opened its season with an 8-1 win over Vinal Tech in the Connecticut Technical Conference. Adam Chioccola added two goals for the Eagles while Meynor Sanchez Pavon, Luca Iglesias and Gabe De La Cruz each scored once.

    College volleyball

    • Regis defeated Mitchell College 25-10, 25-14 and 25-16. Sophie Arsenau led the Mariners (2-4) with four kills and three blocks while Claire Binfield had 13 assists and six digs and Jade Cain had four blocks.

    • Amanda Dake had a match-high 12 kills and five aces to go with eight digs while Maddie James and Sophia Galdamez each had nine kills leading Coast Guard Academy to a 3-0 win over previously unbeaten Merchant Marine on Tuesday night. Game scores were 25-11, 25-20 and 25-19. It was sixth straight time that Coast Guard (6-3) has beaten MMA (5-1) and the win gives the Bears a 2-0 lead in the 2021-22 Superintendent's Trophy standings. Carmen Zipf led the Bears with nine digs while Lauren Hatfield added eight.

    Men's soccer

    • Coast Guard Academy played to a 2-2 overtime draw with Salve Regina on Tuesday night. The Bears (5-0-1) scored their first goal on a direct kick by Gabe Gallant in the 26th minute, and after falling behind 2-1, Robbie Fugett scored the equalizer in the 39th minute. Coast Guard goalie John Vaaler made six saves.

    H.S. boys' cross country

    • East Lyme opened its season by sweeping a quad-meet at Rocky Neck State Park, defeating Woodstock (16-47) in ECC Division I, Stonington (19-44) and Windham (15-50) on Tuesday. Stonington beat Windham (15-50) and lost to Woodstock (20-43). The Vikings' Luke Anthony won individual honors in 16:30 while Stonington's Ryan Gruczka was second in 17:21 followed by East Lyme's Sean McCauley, Brendan Fant and Nate Bergman in third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

    • New London's Gabriel Frommer won individual honors in a meet against Putnam on Tuesday where no team scores were kept. Frommer finished in 17:14.9 for the Whalers while teammate Edward Macauliffe finished third.

    H.S. girls' cross country

    • East Lyme swept a quad-meet at Rocky Neck State Park on Tuesday with wins over Woodstock (20-37) in ECC Division I, Stonington (15-50) and Windham (15-50). Woodstock also beat Stonington 15-50 while Stonington and Windham did not score.Woodstock's Linsey Arends was the top finisher in 20:46, but East Lyme took the next five spots with Izzy Paggioli second (21:58), Aranza Torres third (21:59), Kennedy Holsapple fourth (22:12), Syd Sager fifth (22:24) and Kayleigh Jensen sixth (22:54).

    H.S. field hockey

    • Fitch opened its season with a 2-0 ECC victory over Waterford on Tuesday. Sophie Ash had a goal and assist for the Falcons while Olivia Romano scored a goal, Ashleigh Holmes had an assist and goalie Madison Kite Gerrish made four saves.

    H.S. swimming

    • Fitch/Stonington/New London opened its season with a 95-70 ECC victory over Waterford on Tuesday. Addison Furling and Delaney Reck won two events apiece for the Falcons, Fulling winning the 200-yard IM (2:27.50) and 500 freestyle (5:42.27) and Reck capturing the 50 free (25.24) and 100 backstroke (1:03.02). They were also joined by Laura Letellier and Anna Orphanides on the winning 200 medley relay team (2:00.72).
