    Local roundup: New London boys roll to 5-1 ECC soccer win over Lyman

    New London — Jose Hernandez and Moise Sanchez-Melgar scored goals two minutes apart in the first half and New London used the quick burst as a springboard to Thursday's 5-1 victory over Lyman Memorial in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division III boys' soccer match.

    Hernandez converted a Nichols Churis corner kick in the 23rd minute for the Whalers (4-1, 2-1) and Sanchez-Melgar, assisted by Dooby Robert, made it 2-0 two minutes later.

    Andy Suarez, Flavio Alvarado and Robert added goals in the second half for New London with assists going to Yovany Sanchez-Duenas, Alexis Vitorino and Churis.

    Thomas Cardinali, assisted by Bennett Murphy, scored for Lyman (2-3, 1-1) in the second half.

    In other matches:

    • Daimon Pollard scored three goals as top-ranked Ledyard remained unbeaten with a 6-0 ECC Division II win over Windham. Nick Washington added two goals and an assist for the Colonels (6-0, 2-0) while Owen O'Brien scored a goal, Sebby Fieldsend had two assists and Mason Day and Eli Diette each had assists.

    • Goals by Colby Cowan and Carter Vasington lifted Montville to a 2-1 victory over Killingly in an ECC Division III match. Zach Handler and Aaron Muncaster added assists for the Indians (3-0, 1-0) while goalie Adonis Santiago made a pair of saves.

    • Anders Silberberg and Mason Bussman scored two goals apiece as Old Lyme won its first match with an 8-1 victory over North Branford in the Shoreline Conference. Liam Celic, Gavin Biega, Mason Wells and  Brenden Landry each added a goal for the Wildcats (1-4, 1-3) while goalies Jonah Lathrop and Aidan Russell combined for three saves.

    • Cheney Tech rolled to a 4-1 victory over Grasso Tech in the Connecticut Technical Conference. Fabricio Gonzalez scored the lone goal for Grasso Tech (1-2-1).

    Girls' soccer

    • Audrey Palmer scored two goals and Liz Glover a third as Bacon Academy defeated Killingly 3-0 in an ECC Division II match. Both are freshmen. Another freshman, Veronica Smith, had an assist as did Cara Shea for the Bobcats (3-2-1, 1-2).

    • Shelby Rice and Janelle Lamber scored goals in the opening two minutes as Norwich Tech cruised to a 6-0 win over Prince Tech in the CTC. Lambert finished with two goals for the Warriors (4-0-1) and Rice added two assists, while Alicia Burroughs, Ella Chan and Arianie Ruiz each added a goal and Gracie Dufault had an assist.

    H.S. field hockey

    • Sophia Hathaway scored three goals as Waterford roll to a 6-1 ECC win over Killingly. Joyce Mak, Kylie Hopkins and Lauren Santos also scored goals for the Lancers (2-3-1, 1-1-1) and Kam Mazzulli had an assist.

    H.S. swimming

    • Addison Fulling, Laura Letellier, Anna Orphanides and Delaney Reck won two events apiece as Fitch/Stonington/New London defeated Old Lyme/Valley Regional/Old Saybrook 100-63 in a nonleague meet. Fulling won the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.98) and 500 free (5:39.00), Letellier won the 200 individual medley (2:31.75) and 100 breaststroke (1:16.58), Orphanides won the 50 free (26.75) and 100 butterfly (1:04.03) and Reck won the 100 free (56.25) and 100 backstroke (1:04.58). Reck, Fulling and Orphanides also joined Sophia Pacheco to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:49.30) for the Falcons (3-0).

    College volleyball

    • Sophia Galdamez had 11 kills and nine digs to highlight Coast Guard Academy's come-from-behind 3-1 nonleague win over Trinity. Game scores were 25-27, 26-24, 25-22 and 25-18. Bella Fleeger added 10 kills and five blocks for the Bears (8-4) while Kaela France had 21 digs, Noelle Tursky 39 assists and 18 digs, and Carmen Zipf 10 digs.

    • Wesleyan defeated Connecticut College 25-20, 25-20 and 25-16 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Freshman Katherine Randall had 11 kills and 10 digs for the Camels (0-3, 0-3) while Julia Dailey added 14 digs, Lauren Carey had 22 assists, five digs and two blocks, and Katie Gunderman had five kills and three blocks.

    • Lyman Memorial graduate Meg Verizzi had 46 assists and 13 digs during Eastern Connecticut's 25-19, 25-15, 23-25 and 25-5 victory over Mitchell College on Wednesday night. Olivia DeLoach had nine kills and 17 digs to lead the Mariners (2-7).
