    Local roundup: East Lyme's Anthony qualifies for national championships

    New York — East Lyme's Luke Anthony qualified for the Eastbay National Cross Country Championships on Saturday with an eighth-place finish at the Northeast Regional meet at Van Cortlandt Park.

    Anthony, a senior who has committed to continue his career at Providence College, finished the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes, 28.3 seconds.

    The top 10 finishers earned a trip to Balboa Park in San Diego on Saturday, Dec. 11, for the nationals.

    Anthony, who won Eastern Connecticut Conference and Class MM state titles before placing fifth at the State Open and fourth at the New England Championships, was one of four Connecticut runners to qualify for the national meet.

    West Hartford's Gavin Sherry, the State Open and New England champion from Conard High School, won the race in a course record 15:05.8, while Manchester's Aidan Puffer finished sixth in 15:26.6 and Newington's Michael Bohlke was the final qualifier in 10th in 15:36.7.

    Men's hockey

    • Seth Stadheim scored a pair of goals as Connecticut College defeated SUNY Brockport 3-2 in the first round of the Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The Camels (1-2) will play host Skidmore for the tournament championship on Sunday at 4 p.m.

    Paul Capozzi also scored for Conn, which was outshot 44-20, while Anthony Quatieri had a pair of assists and goalie Michael McHale made 42 saves.

    • Marc Gatcomb and Artem Shlaine each had a goal and two assists as UConn cruised to a 6-1 non-conference win over Colgate at the XL Center. Hudson Schandor, Nick Capone, Carter Turnbull and Harrison Rees also scored goals for the Huskies (8-6), while goalie Darion Hanson made 31 saves. Colgate is 8-8.

    Women's hockey

    • Haylee Owen's overtime goal with 1:50 remaining lifted Roger Williams to a 4-3 victory over Conn College. Kelly Matthews, Natalie Witkowski and Miyu Miyazaki each scored a goal for the Camels (0-3) — Matthews' and Witkowski's coming on the power play — and goalie Abby Wieczorek made 22 saves. Roger Williams is 6-3.
