    Local roundup: Norwich Tech baseball edges New London 5-4

    New London — Lucas Charette was the winning pitcher and had two hits as Norwich Tech beat New London 5-4 in a high school baseball game Friday.

    Chace Davidson and Logan Spillane each scored twice for Norwich Tech (2-1). Eddie Torres singled, doubled and scored twice and Sean Raymond doubled and scored twice for New London (0-2), which made six errors, accounting for five unearned runs.

    H.S. softball

    • Addie Hauptmann pitched a five-inning no-hitter as Wheeler beat Ellis Tech 15-0. Hauptmann struck out 11 with two walks and was also 3-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI. Maddie Perkins was 3-for-4 with two RBI and scored three times and Addie Stanley drove in two runs for Wheeler (2-1).

    • Caity Flynn and Avery Sulman combined to pitch a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Norwich Tech beat Parish Hill 12-5. Flynn also had two singles, a double, a triple and scored three runs. Khaiyanna Maldonado singled, doubled and scored three runs and Morgan Cook and Autumn Hanks each had two hits and scored twice for the Warriors (1-1).

    H.S. boys' track

    • Josh Mooney won the 100 meters (11.1 seconds), 110 hurdles (15.5), shot put (39 feet, 5 inches) and javelin (172-5) in Stonington's 108-35 victory over Plainfield. Steven Wilk added victories in the 300 hurdles, long jump and triple jump and Ryan Gruczka was first in the 1,600, 3,200 for the Bears (1-0). Billy deCastro, Anders Dahl, Jason Morse and Oliver Cooke teamed to win the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

    H.S. girls' track

    • Sophia Anderson won the high jump (4-0), pole vault (7-6) and triple jump (25-6) for Stonington in a 112-30 defeat of Plainfield. Nancy Inthasit won the 100 and the 200 for the Bears (1-0) and Addison Labbe the 1,600 and 3,200.

    H.S. boys' volleyball 

    • Norwich Free Academy beat Hand 3-1, winning 25-17, 25-18, 18-25, 28-26. Keegan Johnston had four kills, two aces and three assists, Paul Ericson had eight assists and two kills and Jackson Lee had two kills for NFA (1-1).

    • Sport Sciences won the fifth game 15-9 for a 3-2 win over Norwich Tech. Norwich Tech (0-3) took a 2-0 lead with 25-19 and 26-24 wins before SMSA tied the match with 25-10 and 25-15 wins. Tenzin Samten had 12 digs, seven kills and three aces for the Warriors. 

    H.S. boys' tennis

    • Stonington beat St. Bernard/Wheeler 7-0. Tucker Callahan, Matthew Turrisi and Jackson Conlon won their matches for the Bears (2-0) along with the doubles teams of Conrad Tobiassen-Joshua Lord, Chase Donnarummo-Peter Schoenecker and Peter Previty-Owen Grant. St. Bernard/Wheeler (0-2) forfeited at No. 4 singles. 

    • Charlie Hinkley, Griffin McGlinchey, Will Danes and Nikolai Stephens-Zumbaum won singles matches for Old Lyme in a 7-0 victory over Old Saybrook. The Wildcats also got a win from the doubles team of Micah Bass/Aidan Kerrigan, while Old Saybrook forfeited the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches.

    H.S. girls' tennis

    • Mara Wolff, Avni Kabra and Yurina Shirai won singles matches in East Lyme's 6-1, season-opening victory over St. Bernard. The Vikings also got doubles wins from the tandems of Iris Liu/Avery Rindell, Priya Whitley/Gracie Davis and Jeanette Liu/Riddhi Bansal. Sasha Mazione won at No. 4 doubles for St. Bernard (0-3).

    • Fitch's Julia Mielguj topped NFA's Paige Raposo 6-2, 6-2, and the Falcons went on to finish with a 7-0 victory over the Wildcats. Charlotte Beaulieu, Maddie Beaulieu and Fiza Sharift also had singles wins for Fitch (1-1) and the Falcons got doubles victories from the teams of Libby Henderson/Sophie Ash, Catelyn Servini/Kelly Tucley and Ada Ellis/Izzy Ash. NFA is 1-1.

    • NFA beat New London 4-0 in an ECC Division II match on Thursday that was shortened by rain. Emily Eggler, Katrina Hitchcock and Shayla Roche won their matches for NFA along with Gabrielle McLeod and Leeya Fabry at No. 1 doubles. Emily Fielding of New London (0-2, 0-1) won the first set at No. 1 singles but the match couldn't be completed.

    • Norwich Tech beat Platt Tech 5-2 in a CTC match on Thursday. Kara Espinosa, Alyssa Mikolajczak and Amaris Moreno won their matches for the Warriors (1-1) along with the doubles teams of Ildanita Campos-Amber Kerby and Zerrin Ratzer-Alexa Lopez.

    College softball

    • Coast Guard Academy rallied for two runs in the seventh inning of the second game for a 3-2 win at WPI and salvaged a split of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference doubleheader. WPI won the opener 9-5.

    Lilia Farlow's sacrifice fly in the seventh scored pinch runner Jackie Carter to cap a two-run rally as the Bears (6-6, 2-2) scored twice in the inning and held on for the win. Pitcher Amanda Moore (4-2) scattered seven hits and allowed two runs while walking two and striking out five to get the win. Mariah Dewey and Isabelle Shroyer each had two hits. 

    In the first game, WPI (11-11, 1-3) scored three runs each in the second and third to take a 7-1 lead. Selena Serna was 3-for-3 with a double for Coast Guard while Dewey and Shroyer each had two hits for the Bears. Dewey blasted a two-run homer to left, her first of the season, in the seventh.

    College hockey

    • UConn sophomore Ryan Tverberg was named a CCM/ACHA Men's Hockey All-American as one of the nation's top-24 players at the "Friday Night at the Frozen Four" in Boston. Tverberg earned a spot on the East Second Team.

    The UConn sophomore is the second Husky to earn All-American status during the program's Division I era (1998-present) and is the second in consecutive years after Jonny Evans was named to the second team last season.  Tverberg is also one of six sophomores among this year's honorees and is one of seven Hockey East players to be named, the highest total among college hockey's conferences.

    Tverberg played all 36 games for the Huskies this season, leading the team with 14 goals, ninth among Hockey East scorers.  He finished the season with 32 points, second on the team and ninth in the league.  He had two power play goals and two game-winners on his ledger and finished the year as a +10.
