    Local roundup: Waterford Legion splits doubleheader with Willimantic

    Waterford — Waterford split a Zone 6 American Legion baseball doubleheader with Willimantic on Saturday, winning the opener 13-0 before losing the second game 8-6.

    Aidan Whitten pitched a one-hitter as Waterford won the opener, striking out five with one walk over five innings. Waterford (8-1) scored seven runs in the second inning to take an 8-0 lead. The rally was capped by a three-run double by Evan McCue. Connor Rowe and Sean Salvador had three hits each and Ken Miller, Jack Lathrop and McCue had two runs each for Waterford. Parker Woodmansee had the hit for Willimantic.

    Willimantic (9-1) broke a 6-6 tie in Game 2 when Gavin Covell hit a two-run triple. Preston Taber and Salvador had two hits each for Waterford. 

    In other games:

    • Norwich swept a doubleheader from Jewett City, winning each game 13-0 in five innings. Jason Hicks allowed one hit over 4.2 innings in the opener with eight strikeouts and Jacob Savage struck out the only batter he faced to end the game. Daniel St. George allowed three hits over four innings in the second game, striking out five, and Ty Pomroy pitched the final inning.

    Anthony Sanchez was 5-for-8 and scored three runs to lead Norwich (6-3). Ryan Trudeau had three hits and Jason Wedge and Savage drove in three runs each. Jewett City (0-10) was held to four hits.

    • Anthony Jessuck pitched a two-hitter over six innings as Waterford beat Norwich 10-0 Friday night. Jessuck struck out seven and Ken Miller was 3-for-4 for Waterford. Matt Reilly, Tate Scherer, Conner Rowe and Evan McCue also had multiple hits for Waterford.

    District 10 LL softball (10-12)

    • Salem/Montville defeated Waterford 16-0 Friday behind the pitching of Abby Daniewicz, who allowed no hits and struck out eight over three innings. Jainna Lesniewski led Salem/Montville with two hits, including an inside-the-park home run, and four RBI.

    District 10 LL softball (8-10)

    • Mikaela Richter struck out 11 over five innings to earn the victory and added a bases-loaded triple as East Lyme/Salem defeated Lyme/Old Lyme 14-4. Brooke Lloyd and Allison Conlin each had hits for East Lyme/Salem. Vicky Glaras had two hits and scored a run for Lyme/Old Lyme.

    • Montville defeated Ledyard 10-0 in a game shortened to five innings by mercy rule. Isabella Kobyluck pitched a complete game, two-hitter with 13 strikeouts and Harper Hedrick was 2-for-3 with an inside-the-park home run. Madison Bingham and Ava Helme each had a hit for Ledyard.

    • Waterford defeated Groton/Mystic 17-1 in three innings. Winning pitcher Reese Firmin didn't allow a hit and struck out nine. Firmin had two hits, including a home run. Kennley Stoddard also had two hits and Kayla McPhillips hit a three-run double for Waterford. Kaileen Berard reached base and scored for Groton/Mystic.
