Mohegan Sun files petitions for recount in Palmer, Mass.

Mohegan Sun filed petitions Friday in Palmer, Mass., seeking a townwide recount of votes cast in Tuesday's referendum defeat of the Mohegan Sun Massachusetts casino project.

Signatures on the petitions have been certified, and registrars will meet next week to schedule the recount, the town clerk's office said.

"We believe this action is necessary because of possible irregularities in the balloting process that were observed on Election Day by poll watchers and voters, and to ensure an accurate count of all votes," Mohegan Sun said in a statement.

Voters rejected the proposed $1 billion casino project by 93 votes. More than 5,200 votes were cast.

Shortly after the referendum result was known Tuesday night, Mohegan Sun officials said they would seek a recount because of problems with a voting machine at one of the towns' polling places.

Mohegan Sun said Wednesday it had begun gathering the necessary signatures.
