USS Toledo commander, 6 crew members visit namesake city

Groton — Cmdr. Sam Geiger, the commanding officer of the USS Toledo and six crew members visited their namesake city, May 1 to 3.

They planned to attend the 200th anniversary celebration of the siege of Fort Meigs and meet with members of the Toledo Navy League, American Legion, submarine veterans, local Sea Cadet personnel and parents and patients at the Toledo Children’s Hospital.

Geiger was invited to discuss his experiences serving in the submarine force during a panel discussion at the Toledo Technology Academy and tour the Toledo Maritime Academy. The visit was his first, and the first for a Toledo (SSN 769) commanding officer in the past decade.

Machinist’s Mate Fireman Rudy Taylor III was asked to perform the national anthem at the Toledo Mud Hens minor league baseball game, where Toledo Mayor Michael Bell was scheduled to present Geiger a key to the city.
