Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Elder Colebut participates in Connecticut Day of Honor

Mashantucket — Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Elder Earl Roy Colebut was among more than 100 veterans who took part in last month’s Connecticut Day of Honor sponsored by the American Warrior organization.

The veterans boarded an April 27 charter flight to Washington, D.C., where they visited the World War II Memorial and other memorials and returned to Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, where they were honored during festivities attended by family, friends and local citizens.

“It was great to see the way people greeted me and took pictures ... I have never been in anything like that before in my whole life,” the 88-year-old Colebut, a World War II veteran, said.

Colebut joined the U.S. Army in 1943. A military truck driver, he served in Belgium, France, and Germany. In 1944, he qualified as a sharpshooter and later fought in the Rhineland Campaign, one of the final Allied phases of the Western European Campaign. Colebut received several decorations and was honorably discharged on June 11, 1946.
