Silkroad Ensemble performs at Connecticut College

The acclaimed Silkroad Ensemble — a collective of artists from around the world — performs at Connecticut College on Friday, bringing its latest work, “Uplifted Voices.”

In these pieces, the Grammy-winning group draws inspiration from the folk and ancestral music of Japan, China, Armenia, Ireland and the Hebrides, and native populations across North America.

Silkroad Ensemble was created in 1998 by Yo-Yo Ma, inspired by how globalization, despite the fact that it can cause division, also increases the opportunities for working together. Ma brought together musicians from the countries of the historic Silk Road to create “a musical language founded in difference.”

The ensemble has continued on and is now led by Rhiannon Giddens.

Silkroad Ensemble, “Uplifted Voices,” 7:30 p.m. Friday, Athey Center, Palmer Auditorium, Connecticut College, 270 Mohegan Ave., New London; $30, $27 for seniors, $15 for students; (860) 439-2787, onstage.conncoll.edu.
