ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The National Weather Service says the strongest wind gusts reported during superstorm Sandy were 90 mph in the New York City metro area.

Data released Wednesday show those peak gusts were at Islip on Long Island and on Robbins Reef, just off Staten Island and Bayonne, N.J., along the Upper New York Bay's main channel.

Sandy made landfall in New Jersey on Monday with winds driving a destructive storm surge before moving inland and weakening over the past couple of days.

The weather service reports that the most rain dropped by the storm in New York was 4.83 inches in Whitesville, an Allegany County hamlet near the Pennsylvania line south of Rochester.

Most of the heaviest rain was reported in western New York, including 3.32 inches at Niagara Falls.
