No Bulger verdict after 2 days of deliberations

BOSTON — The jury in the racketeering trial of James "Whitey" Bulger has gone home for the day without reaching a verdict on its second day of deliberations.

The jury began its discussions Tuesday morning and continued Wednesday before leaving for the day at about 4:30 p.m.

The day was filled with drama, as federal prosecutors and Bulger's lawyers met repeatedly with the judge in sidebar. No explanation was given for the sometimes heated discussions.

The 83-year-old Bulger is charged in a sweeping racketeering indictment with participating in 19 killings during the 1970s and '80s while he led the Winter Hill Gang, South Boston's Irish mob.

Bulger was one of the nation's most wanted fugitives after fleeing Boston in 1994. He was captured in Santa Monica, Calif., in 2011.
